About Us

How Around Town Hound Pet Care started…

Asheville has a way of calling people to it, and that’s exactly what happened for me.  After years of traveling the world and all around the country working for professional athletes, I found myself in Asheville, NC for a little R&R.  I knew immediately this was going to be home, and moved here in 2003.Maripage and the dogs for web

I wasn’t sure what my next steps in life would be, and found Pet Sitting by accident.

My dogs Hunter and Jackie were the inspiration for Around Town Hound.  You see, Jackie & Hunter came in to my life at the end of my soigneur career.  I was still traveling every month or so, and it was always a worry to find consistent, quality care for them while I was away.

After one particularly devastating occasion of leaving my dogs in boarding, I thought, “This is unacceptable. I would never treat another person’s dogs this way!”  And there was my little “ah hah!” moment.

I did some research on what it takes to be a pet professional pet sitter, and soon realized that I already possessed the specific skill set required.  I had been doing the same sort of work for professional athletes all along! And so, in 2011 the adventure of Around Town Hound Pet Care Service began.  It has been a joyful journey ever since.

If you have a dog who has a favorite place to be and play, then you know how excited they are when you’re going there.  My Hunter is that way about going for walks and to the park.  He and Jackie love being there. They get waggy and wiggly as soon as we leash up to go somewhere fun.  I feel joy at watching how happy my dogs are, and hope to bring that same happiness to my pet clients every day.

Your pet’s very own soigneur.

For seven years I was a professional soigneur – traveling with and providing care for world champion professional cycling athletes.  From wake-up calls and daily nutrition, to in-competition support and emergency after care. I was there with them, caring for their needs 24 hours a day.  The expectations for the standard of care were very high – as one would expect expect for world class athletes.

The skill set and drive for excellence that I learned working with professional athletes carries over in to the care I provide for your pets.  From preparing home made meals and planning their exercise and play time, to managing any incident that may arise. It is my goal to bring that same level of care, dedication and skill to your pets, every day. After all, that’s the kind of care I look for in a pet sitter.

Ready for Emergencies!pet tech First Aid badge

Dogs and cats sometimes get themselves in to trouble.  They don’t intend to, but it happens.  I believe in preventing mishaps, and being prepared for emergencies should they happen.  Which is why I am trained in PetTech Pet first Aid & CPR.

My daily Inspiration…

Hunter…

Hunter, my little athlete, was a long dreamed about adoption.  After spending years out on the road, I promised myself that when I stopped traveling it would be time to adopt a dog.  On a trip to a local pet adoption event, this little guy with big ears and an ever wagging tail stole my heart.

Hunter is my little guardian. He is sweet, very smart and sensitive. Hunter’s job is catching bugs & flies that might come in the house during the summer, and telling me there are squirrels on the porch.

Hunter loves nothing more than going for a walk or running free at the dog park. You’ll see him there, running with mouth open, ears flapping and a smile on his face.

and Jackie…

Jackie was really my first pet sitting assignment, way back before thinking about being a pet sitter. She was still a youngster, and belonged to a work associate.  She came stay with me for two weeks.  Her owner never returned…abandoning Jackie.  Eleven years later, Jackie is still with me.

She’s my little helper, companion, foot warmer and snuggle bug. She’s a playful, social girl, and her job is reminding me to take breaks for fun every day.
